IDEAL TALL SHIP JOB 2nd Mate—it's the perfect vacation for a Chief Mate
6 feet tall, blonde hair, blue eyes, outdoorsy as can be, probably grew up around Golden Retrievers. Quick, somebody call LL Bean, their favorite model ran off to sea!!
I first started working on tall ships when I discovered that there were no girls in the rest of the maritime industry.
It was not disappointing!
The biggest challenge was finding a bunk in the foc'sle with a decent curtain.
I overcame it by putting my rigging and sailmaking skills to good use.
Relationships onboard are a logistical nightmare. And totally worth it.
Regarding relationships, I tend to be in favor. For everyone.
My worst habit is ranting about all the plastic crap in the ocean. Particularly when it fouls the prop.
Someday I hope to be completely, fully, me.
I am happiest when swimming in water where the depth is measured in miles.
What kind of hero are you? Depends on who you ask...
Flight or invisibility? Invisibility. Any mate worth their salt should be able to appear out of thin air when the deckhands are loafing.
What is the biggest misconception about working on tall ships? Cocktail hour.
Cats or dogs? Roommates or children?
Would you rather be in a storm at sea or a public open house in port? At sea, of course. Although, in truth, I don't mind open houses so much...as long as I can teach people something.
Favorite port of call? St. Helena
Favorite celebrity captain? I'll get in trouble no matter how I answer this...but I have to give props to Oliver Wipperfuerth, who taught me that you can run the deck with three gestures and a head nod, in total silence—or when you can't talk, because the embarked DJ is too loud.
